Studies with Tea, Rust and Patina
New works on paper, wood and canvas
by John Lindenmayer
Artist Statement:
I specifically use the word studies in the title of this exhibit because these works are prototypes. They are my first attempts in using a restricted pallet derived from chemical reactions of natural materials. The pieces share a textured pallet that is subtle and earthy. The process of time and repetition are key elements for all of these works.
Here, paper and canvas are used to collect the pigments of rusted objects, tea stains and the magnificent turquoise of corroding copper (patina). The process of these pieces is similar to photography or printmaking, in which a negative is used to create a positive image. I consider the 2D works to be the “positive” prints that are transferred from the “negative” 3D objects.
In the process of making the 2D works, objects such as nails and tea bags react with natural elements like water, oxygen, vinegar and salt, where they gain their own unique characteristics of shape and color. These objects then often become the inspiration for future 3D relief works.
The flat and sculptural pieces work well together. Besides creating two sets of distinct works that share complimentary shapes, colors and textures, the relationship employs a principle of zero waste. It becomes a closed system where “waste product” from one piece becomes the raw material for another.
